The Jacksonville Beach area was inhabited by the Timucua Tribe of Indians. In the late 19th century, the area was seen by developers as an oceanfront resort. The first two buildings in the resort were two tents. One was occupied by the first settler and the second tent became the general store and post office. The first home was built in 1884 on the site of the first tent. The area grew as a beach resort and saw the construction of amusements parks and the sale of residential property. Residents began to arrive in the area because of the railroad and the population began to grow. In 1968 residents of Duval County voted to retain its own municipality.
